Auszeichnung für The Renewal of Dwelling

Exhibition and book launch The Renewal of Dwelling

20.4. – 3.6.2023: Exhibition and book launch "The Renewal of Dwelling"

Most of Europe’s housing was built between 1945 and 1975. In only 30 years, the stock was not only renewed, but also significantly expanded. The public sector played a key role, as states and participating institutions sought a way to tackle the existing housing shortage. They also recognised a unique opportunity to implement their political ideals.

The exhibition and publication show for the first time how, against this background, a fundamental renewal of housing and its architectural implementation could succeed. The comparison of individual projects makes clear which overarching themes the residential buildings negotiate and how local issues find their way into the architecture.
The study is based on selected housing estates and buildings from Brussels, Zagreb, Cologne, Oslo, Porto, Lyon and Athens as well as Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield.

In the spirit of an open archive, visitors to the exhibition are invited to discover the projects through facsimile original plans and  historical illustrations as well as newly created drawings and photographs.

Exhibition Roger Boltshauser. Response

Exhibition Roger Boltshauser. Response

2. März bis 23. April – Ausstellung Roger Boltshauser. Response

Exhibition Roger Boltshauser

Exhibition Roger Boltshauser

Dec 8, 2022 –  Jan 14, 2023: Exhibition Roger Boltshauser. response

For Roger Boltshauser, the confrontation with earth as a material, knowing that one is in relatively uncharted territory, that everything has to be rethought and developed, is a fundamental experience that still spurs him on today, makes him courageous but also critical of all conventions, and drives him again and again to find new solutions. He also tries to convey this fundamental experience in his teaching, which is why he always falls back on earth, a material that is still little explored. The point is to develop the courage to think of new approaches to solutions in a world dictated by industry.
In La Galerie d’Architecture, the focus is on earth as a material.
Photographs of selected buildings, which were created in close collaboration with the photographer Luca Ferrario, are shown. Likewise, exquisite sketches and models underscore the interface between architecture and art, which is strongly anchored in Roger Boltshauser’s work. The sketches provide insight into a personal process of oscillating searching, of abstraction and renewed precision, of eternal circling.
Roger Boltshauser is concerned at all levels with the search for an authentic answer that integrates as many aspects as possible. In constant parallel processes, art, design and construction combine to form his work.

SWIPS exhibition in Berlin

SWIPS exhibition in Berlin

4.10.–25.11.2022: Diversity of the Swiss publishing landscape. SWIPS – Swiss Independent Publishers in Berlin

From 4 October to 25 November 2022, 18 independent Swiss publishers present themselves at the Philipp Schaeffer library.
SWIPS stands for Swiss Independent Publishers and is an association of currently 28 independent publishers in German-speaking Switzerland. With this exhibition, the library invites you to explore the world of independent Swiss literature and publishing.
On display are around 90 books from 18 publishing houses, presenting a broad spectrum of SWIPS members.

The publishing houses develop their programmes independently and are not owned by large corporations or media houses; for the most part they are owner-managed.
Their attitude and conviction is demonstrated by their special commitment to their authors. They ensure new discoveries and literary debuts, have high standards for the quality of language and the design and layout of their books. And they like to publish boldly in the commercially oriented book market.
Making the independent publishers visible is one of the main concerns of SWIPS: they are the ones who ensure bibliodiversity!

Despite all the similarities, the programmes of the SWIPS publishers differ significantly from each other: whether poetry or touring books, prose or illustrated books, fiction or political non-fiction, biography or specialist books for architecture – the range of culturally and socially relevant books is astonishing.

6.3. – 23.10.2022: Bilderbücher: illustriert und inszeniert

Picture books: exquisitely illustrated tales full of humour and poetry that captivate adults and children alike. “Picture books: illustrated & staged”, an exhibition curated by picture book expert Hans ten Doornkaat, presents a rich selection of contemporary works from Switzerland and abroad, putting the spotlight on a medium that oscillates between storytelling, illustration and visual design. It also provides a glimpse into the studios of several Swiss illustrators, some of whom can be observed at work during live events. The exhibition is accompanied by a varied programme of events.

Simple tales full of wit and poetry are brought to life as we eagerly turn the pages of picture books, whose illustrations transport us to other worlds. As vehicles for meaning, picture books speak to the reader (or storyteller) in a very direct way. Their illustrations allow us to enjoy the delight of discovery as well as the comfort of familiarity. At the same time, there is always something new to be found in picture books. The longer we look at them, the more multilayered and complex their content becomes – yet they still form a coherent whole. How do picture books achieve this?

The exhibition explores the types of visual narrative found in contemporary picture books, with particular attention to their singular immediacy. It brings stories vividly to life for children and adults alike, and investigates the creative process of picture book production. From jaunty colours to minimalist grey tones, from polished digital images to rough sketches, and from unusual pop-up formats to pages featuring cut-outs, the design possibilities seem endless. The show also visits the studios of Swiss illustrators and takes a look over their shoulders at live events.

The exhibition was curated by Hans ten Doornkaat, his book Das Medium Bilderbuch will be published in May 2022 and can be pre-ordered.

New Titles Spring 2022

New Titles Spring 2022

So far, picture books have not really been part of our publishing program – this is now changing as Hans ten Doornkaat’s Das Medium Bilderbuch takes a close look at design ideas that make use of the book as a medium in its entirety along with its features and typography.

Authors Patric Furrer, Andreas Jud, Stefan Kurath and others ponder on Digitalisierung und Architektur (Digitization and Architecture): Which tools are used in teaching and practice, and what are the connections between the digital and real world?

For the future of sustainable building, it is necessary to rethink the use of concrete. Which building materials Beyond Concrete could we still use and what are the current concepts?

Besides that, existing urban landscapes are facing changes, too. Densification of Urban Landscapes shows how post-Second World War residential developments are treated today.

Podcast «Stadt machen»

Podcast «Stadt machen»

Stadt machen!

Exhibition Roger Boltshauser

Exhibition Roger Boltshauser

August, 26 till September, 12, 2021 – Exhibition and book launch Roger Boltshauser

Although Roger Boltshauser is known for his work as an architect, it was not clear for a long time whether his path would lead into architecture or art.
Impressed by Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Arnulf Rainer, but also by Swiss representatives of Neo-Expressionism, and inspired by the Zurich youth riots in the 1980s, the architect began an artistic oeuvre parallel to his architecture studies, and exhibited it. He has remained true to both disciplines. His free art work is not to explain without his architectural work as, conversely, his architectural projects hardly without his artistic work. In constant parallel processes, art, design and construction combine to create his work.

The exhibition at Galerie Bommer presents a selection of Boltshauser`s sketches and bronze reliefs.

July, 1, 2021, 7pm – Book launch and exhibition opening
Roger Boltshauser, Transformator II

Although Roger Boltshauser is known for his work as an architect, for a long time it was not clear whether his path would lead to architecture or art. Inspired by Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Arnulf Rainer, as well as Swiss Neo-Expressionists, he was already producing and exhibiting his artworks while pursuing a degree in architecture. He has remained faithful to both disciplines, with the result that his independent artworks cannot be explained without his architectural work, and conversely, his architectural work cannot be explained without his artistic work.
His first exhibition at Architektur Galerie Berlin highlighted his realized projects; this new exhibition focuses on his sketches. Despite being a completely different medium, they address the same transformational processes. Ultimately, Roger Boltshauser is concerned at all levels with the constant search for an authentic answer that integrates as many aspects as possible. As such, art, design, and construction take place in constant parallel processes to form a common work.
The sketches, drawn on used envelopes, represent an archive of perceptions, ideas, and projects. Filling the gallery walls in a strict grid, they combine to form a library. A ladder on a rail around the space allows close study even of the drawings hanging above, while mobile shelves present a new monograph of Boltshauser’s work. In addition, a cinematic manifesto on sustainability in architecture transfers the drawings into the reality of building. Meanwhile, in front of the gallery, visitors can condense a pile of earth into an archaic rammed-earth wall.

Event series Gutes Bauen Ostschweiz unterwegs

May 12, 2021, 6 pm – Architektur fertigen.
Positions on the future of design of industrial timber construction

On the occassion of the release of the publication Architektur fertigen. Konstruktiver Holzelementbau, we and the Baumuster-Centrale Zurich invite to the book launch and panel discussion.

In terms of tomorrow`s wooden architecture, design and construction must be based on current production methods, but they must also question and challenge them. Timber architecture can be expressive, economical and sustainable. But under what conditions and according to what rules is a modern timber structure ideally built?

Experts from design, implementation and research explain planning strategies and discuss conditions, tendencies and potentials of the timber construction design of today and tomorrow.

Lobende Anerkennung (honorable recognition) for "Upcycling" in the most beautiful books of Liechtenstein competition

"Upcycling. Reuse and repurposing as a Design Principle in Architecture"was honored with a "lobende Anerkennung" in the most beautiful books in Liechtenstein competition in 2020. The publication`s design, which was designed by Annett Höland, is characterized primarily by the fact that the content of the book has been taken into account and the book cover has also been upcycled. All of the authors involved in the project made room for new things in their bookshelves and made their unused books available as raw material for the production of the cover, from which the special hand-made paper for the cover was created in the Basel paper mill.

Unfortunately, this first edition is sold out at the moment, but we are already accepting pre-orders for the second edition.

POSTPONED TO SPRING 2021
November 5, 2020 – Book launch «(K)ein Idyll – Das Einfamilienhaus» [(Not) an Idyll - The single-family house]

Together with the author Stefan Hartmann, we cordially invite you
one for the book launch of (K)ein Idyll – Das Einfamilienhaus. Eine Wohnform in der Sackgasse.

From terraced workers` houses to prefabricated houses – the story of the most popular form of living:
It is still relatively young. It was built as a workers` house in the 19th century and reached its first peak in the 1970s.
Moderate densification of existing settlements: The costs of building and maintaining the infrastructures burden the communities. In addition, many homeowners in the “baby boomer” era are now old and no longer able to manage their house and garden, so they moved away and vacancies arise.
What will the single-family house districts look like in the future?
Today we see the consequences: The agglomerations are sprawled by single-family housing estates with low density. The book presents solution models for sustainable future use.

Editorial:
Autumn saw a number of changes at Triest. On the one hand, we are happy to welcome Andrea Woods to our team. She will be in charge of press
and marketing affairs. On the other, it was time to professionalise our Swiss distribution service and to hand over dispatch to the Buchzentrum.
Once again we would like to thank all of the small bookstores who took the trouble to help us out by ordering directly in recent years.

The spring programme features the following titles that we warmly recommend to you and your customers: Vico Magistretti. Stories of Objects explains why even classics of furniture design are not manufactured endlessly. And Compact Courtyard Housing focuses once again on a typology that picks up the topic of urban density. Thanks to the great success of Pisé – Rammed Earth there will now be a new hardcover edition.

Kerstin Forster, Andrea Wiegelmann and Andrea Woods wish you many inspiring moments with our new publications.

From the archives: Hermann Eidenbenz und Bobst Graphic

29.1.2020, 7pm – Book presentations Hermann Eidenbenz / Bobst Graphic, «Visual Archives» series

The "Visual Archives" series shows the results of research projects initiated and carried out at the ECAL / Ecole Cantonale d`Art de Lausanne. It examines unexplored legacies of designers, authors and brands. Documents and visual material from archives are accompanied and contextualized by critical essays.

In the meantime, the first two volumes have been published by Triest Verlag, which are presented jointly by the authors.

Program:

– Welcome by Andrea Wiegelmann (publisher), moderation: Robert Lzicar (designer, design historian)

– Sarah Klein: Hermann Eidenbenz. Teaching graphic design
Hermann Eidenbenz was one of the first persons in Switzerland to describe himself as a graphic designer. From the first half of the 20th century into the 1950s, he was involved in graphic design education in Zurich, Magdeburg, Basel and Brunswick, first as a student and later as a teacher.

– Giliane Cachin: Bobst Graphic. 1972-1981
The history of Bobst Graphic – a pioneering feat in the development of the phototypesetting at the time – has never been included in the rich history of Swiss graphic and font design. The author Giliane Cachin decided to document and share this fascinating story from the inside based on personal interviews.

Schauplatz Bauhaus

December 14,  2019 – Schauplatz Bauhaus

8 to 10 Novemer, 2019, Tÿpo St. Gallen "Balance"

3-day design symposium with a Triest book stand.

Anyone involved in design has to make decisions on a daily basis: on colours, shapes and ideas, proportions, form and functionality, and on what is too much or too little. We communicate, negotiate, conceive, compose, postpone, determine, develop, design, emphasize, strike out and realise – in a unique and audacious dance, a struggle for balance!
And even before the actual design task begins, equilibrium needs to be established: between clients and partners, in the process of planning and
coordination, as regards time and money, concept and implementation, schnapps and idea … in thefrenzy of daily professional life, it is not easy to keep one’s balance!

Tÿpo St. Gallen sees itself as a forum for professionals and design freaks, to seek and promote discussions between speakers and the public.
Besides the presentations, there is lots of time for talks and an inspiring array of fringe events.

Exhibition The Bones of Architecture

Exhibition The Bones of Architecture

18 June to 15 September, 2019: The Bones of Architecture – exhibition

Besides the many components that characterise the appearance of a building, it is the physical prerequisites that are crucial. They tie the (structural) components together and let the building “stand”: just like the bones of vertebrates and us humans, every building has a load-bearing structure.

From that perspective, construction, and thus also the buildings themselves are subject to fundamental sets of rules; as long as they are observed, the connection of their materials and components ensures good load bearing properties. In that way, these sets of rules create forms, patterns, orders and restrictions.
Today, construction and design technologies challenge the idea of structure and its role as a generator of architectural form. Moreover, the position of structure within the manifold factors of design and building is also under scrutiny in view of new possibilities to create form.

This publication investigates the cultivation of structures for architecture as developed by practising architects and engineers. Presenting the works and approaches of seven European architects and engineers, the editor simultaneously reflects on the rules, strategies and methods of designing structures and load bearing structures.

With selected works by: Rui Furtado, engineer, Porto; Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter, Copenhagen; Pedrazzini Guidotti, engineers, Lugano; Bruther, architects, Paris; Brandlhuber+, Arno  Brandlhuber, architect, Berlin; engineer Bernabeu, Madrid; 6a Architects, London, accompanied by interviews and texts by Ákos Moravánszky and Mario Rinke.

Curator: Mario Rinke. Publication coming soon.

14 June, 2019 – Book launch "Othmar Motter – Meister der Extrabold.
Ein Streifzug durch das Archiv der Vorarlberger Graphik"

Together with the author and designer Elias Riedmann, we present the extensive monograph on the Vorarlberg graphic artist and typeface designer Othmar Motter.

Tektura, Ombra, Corpus and Femina. While these fonts are world famous and widely popular, the man behind them, Othmar Motter (1927–2010), is only known to a few. By and large, his great international reputation – according to Anita Kern, “probably the Austrian graphic designer with the strongest international presence worldwide” – has been restricted to specialist circles, and even within those, his designs are better known than the graphic designer and person himself.

Spring 2019 program ist online

Spring 2019 program ist online

New Titles are online

We will discuss the question of how to deal with residential buildings of the 1950s to the 1970s in the genre Architecture in our spring program. The Renewal of Dwelling examines 80 selected residential settlements from across Europe creating the basis for a future-oriented approach to these buildings.

Readability at a very basic level is the topic of an international working group that explores the role and importance of graphic design for the conveyance of content in Lesbar – Typografie der Wissensvermittlung

And finally, we offer two titles that showcase a unique company on the one hand and an equally unique designer on the other. Bobst Graphic 1971–1981 first describes the importance of the French-speaking Swiss company for the development of phototypesetting machines, Othmar Motter – Meister der Extrabold [Master of Extrabold] presents the work of the graphic design pioneer from Vorarlberg, Austria.

Follow the link to the online presentation or for downloading the program. We sincerely hope you will be fascinated by our spring collection.

Symposium

Symposium

Schauplatz 68

Lecture on Ernst Keller

Lecture on Ernst Keller

14.9.2018, 7pm – Lecture "No Style. Ernst Keller" by Peter Vetter

In various different places, particularly in the USA, when writing the history of graphic design, Ernst Keller is referred to as the father of Swiss Style, later International Typographic Style. This is down to the large number of Keller students, who later shaped this Swiss Style and made it famous. Keller’s achievement is shown purely using his oeuvre, primarily his poster designs and his work on lettering and graphic design in architecture.

Ernst Keller’s contribution to the development of innovative, non-academic didactic principles in design training plays a fundamental role. His teaching activity starting in 1918 can be defined as one of the first systematic training programmes for graphic design in the world.
His many years of teaching between 1918 and 1956 resulted in very different designers. They include the protagonists of new graphic design such as Richard Paul Lohse, Josef Müller-Brockmann and Carlo Vivarelli or various talents of artistic illustration such as Heiri Steiner, Lora Lamm or K. Domenic Geissbühler, and innovative designers such as Hermann Eidenbenz or Gérard Miedinger. As well as scientific illustrators such as H.P. Weber or caricaturist H.U. Steger. An additional group consists of designers who teach internationally such as Pierre Gauchat, Walter Käch, Robert Sessler, Fred Troller and Josef Müller-Brockmann. This diversity of talent is an impressive documentation of the openness, sustainability and rejection of dogma evident in Ernst Keller’s teaching.

Exhibition Pisé – Rammed Earth

14.4.-21.10.2018 - Exhibition «Pisé - Rammed Earth. Tradition and Potential»

The exhibition "Pisé - Tradition and Potential" calls in a first part the European tradition of Pisé, the rammed earth building culture, in memory and shows impressive examples, which originated from the 15th century in France and in Switzerland.

In another part, designs for a lookout tower made of rammed earth, which students of the Technical University of Munich developed during a semester with Roger Boltshauser for the Brickworks Museum, can be seen.

The third part presents selected buildings by Roger Boltshauser and his office. On the one hand, the focus is on rammed earth projects and large-scale buildings, on the other hand on planned, awarded or already realized buildings in the canton of Zug.

Exhibition «The Renewal of Dwelling»

Exhibition «The Renewal of Dwelling»

15.5. till 13.7.2018 – Exhibition «The Renewal of Dwelling»

Most of the housing stock in Europe was rebuilt between 1945 and 1975. The reasons for this lie in the reconstruction of Europe after the destruction of the Second World War and in the economic boom phase from the late 1950s. The public sector plays a special role in this short historical phase. Thus, the state or state-subsidized institutions had to eliminate the great housing shortage and at the same time had the unique opportunity to realize their (residential) political ideals.

The exhibition "Renewal of Dwelling" focuses on subsidized European multi-storey housing construction between historically grown standards, conventions and norms as well as the search for new forms of living, innovative technical-constructive possibilities and alternative aesthetic ideals.

The illustrated drawings, photographs and documentations were prepared by students of the Technische Universität Darmstadt as part of the research seminar "Living in Europe".

An exhibition of the Department of Design and Housing of the Technical University of Darmstadt. Research project and exhibition conception: Prof. Dr. Elli Mosayebi and Dipl.-Ing. Michael Kraus.

Book presentation New Schools of Thought

Book presentation New Schools of Thought

June 6, 2018, 19:00 – Book presentation New Schools of Thought.

Augmenting the field of architectural education /
Architectural education in Europe is increasingly being changed by factors such as political regulations, internationalisation, social and climatic transformation processes and not least by rapid digitalisation. Today, architecture schools are looking at how they can position themselves in this environment through innovative didactic, programmatic and spatial restructuring of their organisations.

Using 18 examples, four of which are presented in detail, the publication New Schools of Thought shows tendencies in architectural education beyond higher education. This book focuses on institutions and initiatives which, in addition to classical higher education, also cover previous education for children and young people, research and public mediation as extended areas of architectural education. This publication examines the conditions that shape these "schools of thought".

Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited

May 3–5, 2018, Experts`s Panel Meeting

The research project "Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited" focuses on how Swiss graphic design and typography has achieved its on-going legitimacy, reputation and status. The three-year project started in October 2016 and is the biggest research collaboration in the design field ever funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. In the three sub-projects, mixed groups of doctoral students and researchers from seven institutions investigate into different aspects of Swiss graphic design – its teaching, its networks and its forms of publication.

Design symposium Beyond Change

Design symposium Beyond Change

8.–10.3.2018 – SDN Design Research Winter Summit 2018

Design cannot change anything before it changes itself.

Current discourse in design research, art, cultural studies, media studies, philosophy, and the social sciences is dominated by the much-debated concept of the “Anthropocene,” which claims that we are entering a new geological age determined primarily by the effects of human activity on the planet. It has been used to increase awareness of the negative influence of our actions on climate and the environment, and thus on the terms and conditions of our long-term survival. Against the backdrop of ongoing catastrophe and normalised crisis, the image of designers as problem- solvers and shapers of material-visual culture is constantly evoked. Designers are expected to come to the rescue and to draft speculative scenarios, construct artificial worlds, and develop smart solutions. In short: design is wielded as a catalyst for global change.
But isn’t this image of the designer as an omnipotent problem-solver itself problematic? What if design is not the solution, but very much complicit in the problems it wants to solve? At this point, we feel compelled to ask: How can design truly contribute to a more just society and sustainable forms of living without compromising bottom-up initiatives and marginalising the voices of those who are most directly affected?

The conference “Beyond Change: Questioning the role of design in times of global transformation” is a critical response to the tendency of seeing global crisis first and foremost as a worldwide design competition. How can we reimagine design as an unbounded, queer, and unfinished practice that approaches the world from within instead of claiming an elevated position? How, for once, can we see design as a situated practice instead of turning it into the Global North’s escape and problem-solving strategy?

The conference program includes key notes by Cheryl Buckley, Mia Charlene White, Beatriz Colomina, Kenny Cupers, Kjetil Fallan, Ramia Mazé among others, sessions and discussions on histories of sustainability, slow living, sustainable materials, sustainable urbanism, commons, indigenous knowledge, artisanal design, the politics of objects, radical pedagogies, and more.

Book presentation and exhibition

24.1.2018, 18.00: Book presentation and exhibition of "Die Geburt eines Stils" by Dorothea Hofmann

It all begann with a letter. A letter which I wrote in 2001 to the Philip B. Meggs, professor, art historian and graphic designer as well as the editor of A History of Graphic Design – maybe the most important handbook on graphic design history in the USA.
The letter dealt with the fundamentals, origins and influences of the Neue Grafik, which caused a stir internationally from Switzerland in the 1950s. 15 years later, this book was created …

No Style.
Ernst Keller (*1891–†1968). Teacher and Pioneer of the Swiss Style.

Ernst Keller is referred to as the father of Swiss Style, later International Typographic Style. This is down to the large number of Keller students, who later shaped this Swiss Style and made it famous. Keller’s achievement is shown purely using his oeuvre, primarily his poster designs and his work on lettering and graphic design in architecture.

Book launch: Methodenhandbuch

Book launch: Methodenhandbuch

12.12.2017: Book launch and Discussion.

Design processes may initially seem to be unsystematic and lacking in order, but in architecture and urban development, methods are a fundamental part of design practice. And, beyond the design process, they can help to decode the frame conditions of a design, revealing strategies for successful implementation.

With this in mind, this handbook aims to serve two purposes: to investigate individual methods in a concrete area of application, illustrated using examples, and to focus on the methods themselves.
In this way, the designer learns to understand his own practice as well as being provided with tools that support the design process.

Program details upcoming.

Book review

Book review

16 September 2016 - Book review on verDICHTen in TEC21

Discussion and book presentation

Wednesday, 17 August, 7pm – Discussion on the occasion of publication of “verDICHTen. Internationale Lowrise-Wohnsiedlungen im Vergleich”

What can high-quality inward consolidation at city and canton level look like? This new publication from Triest Verlag showcases a selection of low-rise residential developments that demonstrate alternatives to conventional building typologies.
But what general conditions are required for a new planning practice, how can the process of consolidation succeed?

The discussion is conducted by Regula Iseli (Head Institut Urban Landscape, ZHAW Winterthur), on the podium are:
– Reto Pfenninger (editor, Head Institut Architektur FHNW, Muttenz)
– Roger Boltshauser (Boltshauser Architekten, Zurich)
– Wilhelm Natrup (Amtschef, Amt für Raumentwicklung, Canton of Zurich)
– Adrian Streich (Adrian Streich Architekten, Zurich)

Followed by buffet

Preview Fall 2016

May 2016 – Preview Fall 2016

Attention – we are going to present three new titles in the fall season. We investigate the question, why Swiss Graphic design became so famous, and what was the role of Basel School of Design. And we try to find out what is needed for a public discussion about building culture. By reprinting the «Basler Politische Schriften» we show that there was a broad discussion on city planning almost 60 years ago – and the books, among them achtung: die Schweiz, are still relevant.

Plain and simple graphic design has extraordinary impact in the world today. Rising with striking clarity from the visual opulence that surrounds us posters of high-density precision or the compact and carefully composed sign systems used at airports have an altogether stunning effect. Pioneer work had already launched the triumphant international success of Swiss graphic design back in the 1960s. This was when the founding fathers Josef Müller-Brockmann, Karl Gerstner or Armin Hofmann introduced and developed the scaling down of design and gave the name “Swiss Style” to what has become a highly influential movement.
